Gifts & Thanks

The Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival is a non-profit volunteer committee of the Maryland Sheep Breeders Association. We appreciate the following support.

Seventh Annual Mamie Francis Blanket Competition

A $5,000 endowment funds a $500 Grand Prize Award in the Mamie Francis Blanket Competition. Mamie was a weaver of small blankets or lap robes. She is remembered by her husband, daughter and three sons with this endowment. This $500 prize was awarded to Ellen DeCarlo in 2009. Contributing $100 each for checks or prizes in this competition are: Harrisville Designs, Interweave Press, Louet North America and The Mannings Handweaving School & Supply Center.

The “FREDDIE” Award

2010 marks the 16th annual “Freddie” Award. This cash award goes to the weaver of the most creative handwoven article entered in the Skein & Garment Competition. This award is funded by an endowment from the family and friends of Mary Fredrika Pfeiffer, an avid Festival supporter. The “Freddie” Award continues her encouragement of excellence in handweaving.

Monica Kelly won this honor in 2009.

Pat Brown Memorial Award

To honor an ardent Festival fan, a group of Maryland spinners funded the Pat Brown Memorial Award for the Best Maryland Fleece in the Fleece Show. A Kent Island shepherd and critter lover, Pat Brown was a multi-talented artist.

A permanent plaque is displayed annually at the Fleece Show. In 2009 the Revere pewter cup and cash award were won by Deborah Paper with a Romney fleece.

Dedication

Mary Louise Clabaugh

Mary Louise Clabaugh dedicated her life to others, and as a mother of four daughters, Brenda Shilling, Tracie Weaver, Carrie McClain and Laura Clabaugh, she was busy with all of their 4-H projects. Whether it was flowers, cooking, baking, or their sheep projects, both breeding and market, Mary always supported her family.

Mary raised and bred natural color sheep even before the girls were involved in 4-H and long after their Frederick County 4-H years. She had an endless knowledge of wool sheep; and knew how to fit them for show and prepare a fleece for grading and judging. She held several offices with Frederick County Sheep Breeders and helped to promote sheep and lamb tasting during Ag Week at a mall in Frederick County, The Great Frederick Fair, and the Catoctin High School FFA Show. She assisted with the Frederick County 4-H Sheep Clinic for many years, sharing her knowledge with 4-H’ers and adults.

For more than 20 years Mary, as part of the “Trio” or, as they referred to themselves, “the pen of 3 aged ewes” worked tirelessly at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. During the entire weekend she could be found in the show ring assisting with the scoring, placing, check-in and penning, rarely breaking for a rest.

Mary and her daughters made several trips to Louisville, Kentucky to show their sheep at the national level. She was loved and will be greatly missed by all that knew her. Mary Louise Clabaugh passed away peacefully, Saturday, Oct. 31 2009, at her home in Foxville, Md., after a 29-year-long battle with cancer.

In appreciation of her dedication to the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, this catalog is dedicated in her memory.
