About Us

Forty years ago I wove my first Rag Rug. Thirty years ago I had my first booth at the Maryland Sheep and Wool festival. Since that time I have recycled well over thirty ton of used cotton and wool clothing. Yarns used for the warp have always been natural fibers; wool, cotton or hemp. The tools of my trade are a pair of scissors and a 18th century counter balance loom. Energy source is from what I bring to the loom each day.

With roots planted firmly in our past, Rag Rugs continue to be a good choice for any floor, any style home. At a moment in time when we need to lessen our impact on the earth Rag Rugs will soften your step. In addition to my Rag Rugs, five years ago I introduced recycled wool sweaters in the form of hot pads or ‘Sweat’r Pads’ as I have named them. Wool is a remarkable fiber, as you know, and these hot pads …

Nistock Farms is located in the southern tier of NY state. We are just a few years from being a century farm! We fully transitioned from dairy to sheep in 2000 and continue to explore ways to showcase the versatility of wool by offering a wide variety of products. Our flock consists of about 125 registered Cotswolds and natural colored crossbreds of several breeds which give us a great range of fiber types to work with.

Nistock Farms is pleased to be an official Cotswold fiber provider in The Livestock Conservancy’s “Shave ‘Em to Save ‘Em” program. We have passport stickers ready to go with your Cotswold purchase – please …

About Us

We are a family operated business that specializes in the elaboration of traditional and naturally dyed rugs from Teotitlan del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico since 1978. Demetrio Bautista Lazo and his Wife Maribel Alavez Vasquez are the fourth generation of family weavers, they inherited the rug making knowledge from their parents and now they are determined to pass on the tradition to their son Victor Manuel Bautista, who has brought a new perspective on traditional patterns by experimenting with their arraignment and the colors.

Next Sunday, as part of the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival Winterfest, we are pleased to offer a free keynote lecture entitled "The Cultural History of Natural Dyes" with Pat Brodowski. Mankind has desired colorful textiles for thousands of years. Color was highly valued and dye materials and techniques were often held secret. Pat shares the history from a European perspective: listen to the story of a secret 20 step formula for red – stolen by memorization; of the newest purple transported in the ballast of pirate ships; of the brilliant orange and magenta face paints taken by Spanish invaders, and of the young woman who created the indigo plantations of South Carolina. Find out which colors were common or royal, foraged or treasured. Your view of historic fashion will be changed forever. Pat's popular natural dyes workshops have been presented at Monticello, Montpelier, Common Ground on the Hill, and to local fiber arts groups. She is fascinated with the historic perspective on color in textiles and with all things botanical. Pat loves to share her knowledge of these things with others. This is a free virtual event.
