About Us

Many of you already know us as HEIRLOOMS, which is our business name.

Our web site www.scandinavianweaveandknit.com features some of our Hand Woven & Hand Knit finished items. Color & texture is what motivate us.

We’ve been on the road going to sheep & wool festivals, arts and crafts shows, and farmer’s markets since 1999.

Maybe we’ve seen you in the Adirondacks or at one of the many sheep and wool festivals, such as Rhinebeck or Maryland, where we’ve been selling our hand dyed yarns since 2008.

With many requests to buy our hand dyed yarns on line we’ve created www.yarnhygge.com to feature some of our yarns, plus Lis’s Knitting Patterns.

“Hygge” is a Danish word best described as a feeling of coziness.

Lis grew up in Denmark. She and her girlfriends would get together – next to the fireplace – drinking tea or coffee and enjoying a few goodies, while they each would work on their projects. Telling stories, sharing family patterns, getting inspired, and teaching each other new techniques. Very “Hyggeligt”!

We hope you enjoy our yarnhygge web site and find something to make your life a little more “hyggeligt”!

Our inventory is constantly changing. Feel free to contact us at any time, if you do not find what you are looking for. Our show inventory is separate from our web inventory.

Some of the fibers we carry are: BFL, Silk/Merino/Seacell, Yak/Silk/Merino, Organic Merino, SW Merino, Camel & Silk, 100% Silk, Swiss Silk, Mulberry Silk, Merino & Cashmere, Merino/Cashmere/Silk, Baby Alpaca, Alpaca & Silk and various other fine fibers, plus Romney lambswool from our friend Janet Schrader’s flock.

We have all weights from cobweb to bulky.

Happy Knitting!

Mike & Lis

PS: We also use our fibers for weaving, mainly scarves and shawls. Feel free to let us know if you need help with setting up for weaving with our yarns.

Next Sunday, as part of the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival Winterfest, we are pleased to offer a free keynote lecture entitled "The Cultural History of Natural Dyes" with Pat Brodowski. Mankind has desired colorful textiles for thousands of years. Color was highly valued and dye materials and techniques were often held secret. Pat shares the history from a European perspective: listen to the story of a secret 20 step formula for red – stolen by memorization; of the newest purple transported in the ballast of pirate ships; of the brilliant orange and magenta face paints taken by Spanish invaders, and of the young woman who created the indigo plantations of South Carolina. Find out which colors were common or royal, foraged or treasured. Your view of historic fashion will be changed forever. Pat's popular natural dyes workshops have been presented at Monticello, Montpelier, Common Ground on the Hill, and to local fiber arts groups. She is fascinated with the historic perspective on color in textiles and with all things botanical. Pat loves to share her knowledge of these things with others. This is a free virtual event.
