About Us

Flying Fibers is brought to you by the mother-daughter team of Jeri Robinson-Lawrence and Irina Lawrence Mathias. They honor and celebrate diversity and inclusion while welcoming everyone to their little corner of the world. Both women are passionate about providing beautiful products to crafters of any skill, as well as promoting the preservation of rare breed sheep. In addition to owning the shop, Jeri and Irina have a flock of rare breed Wensleydale sheep, endangered Leicester Longwool sheep, and rare breed Shetland sheep that they raise on their farm in York County. Based on the season, this local fiber is available in-store and online. These two women are extremely passionate about the fiber arts and are regularly willing to share their knowledge and expertise with whoever desires. Jeri is primarily behind-the-scenes with Irina being present in the yarn shop. Although young in appearance, Irina has extensive knowledge of the fiber arts having begun her journey at the age of six, and can tackle your most challenging of wool needs. These two women make an exceptional team, and are sure to have you smiling at their mother-daughter banter every time you chat with them!

About Us

Welcome to Flying Goat Farm. We are a small family farm located on 25 acres in Frederick Maryland.

Being a maker is integral to my being. I have always loved working with thread and cloth. As an adult I knew that I wanted to start making my own cloth and so learned to weave. I learned to dye in 1990. In the ensuing years, I learned to spin and knit as well as teaching others to embrace their own creativity with textiles, yarn and fiber. I dye nearly every day. It is my passion. I love to put colors together that are harmonious, that excite the eye and that are really fun to work with. I am passionate about helping fiber enthusiasts put together colors that will create beautiful projects.

When we moved here, 17 years ago we decided to get some angora goats so that I could spin their fiber….but also because they are undeniably the cutest of ALL fiber animals. We added fine wool sheep 8 years ago. Since then we have been making our own farm yarn. We have yarn for every project whether you are looking for a worsted for a soft squishy blanket or a more rustic wool yarn for a warm and durable sweater. In fact, I am currently working to build a line of yarn that is Fibershed compliant. That means that it is grown, processed, spun and dyed within 150 miles of our farm. Our farm is also mostly solar powered. So if you are interested in reducing your carbon foot print and increasing the sustainability of what you purchase, we have the yarn for you.

When not in the dye studio or out with our sheep and goats, you can find me in the kitchen making delicious food or binge watching travel shows to calm my adventurer’s spirit. We are committed to helping to feed our community.

Until we meet in person or virtually, Happy Making!!

Lisa

About Us

My educational background is primarily in fine arts (painting, drawing, and ceramics), but since finishing my bachelor’s degree I have experimented and self-taught with a variety of fiber forms and techniques, including both wet and needle felting with wool and silk, the ancient and time-consuming process of shibori dyeing, traditional sewing, weaving, and embroidery, to create a range of art and accessories. More recently my love of fiber has led me to experiment with basket weaving techniques and wire-working to create necklaces and shawl pins. In addition, I’ve started growing and foraging natural dye materials to dye yarn, some of which is for sale this year.

Inspired by botanical forms in nature, as well as color and texture, you will often find me collecting nature’s flotsam and jetsam; seed hulls, cicada wings, pieces of bark. I am especially drawn to natural variations of the one-of-a-kind seen in nature and spend as much time as possible up in the woods on the farm where I live with my family in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

About Us

We are an indie-dyed yarn and spinning fiber company specializing in brilliant colors achieved through scientific optimization of the dye-binding reaction. We were one of the original dyers of yarn gradients way back in 2010 and today keep approximately 50 gradient colorways in stock along with their corresponding fade kits. Recently, we introduced the concept of an infinity gradient, where the user can begin the gradient wherever they want and proceed from there. We plan on introducing the second colorway in this infinity series during the virtual Maryland Sheep and Wool. Aside from gradients, we also have several dozen kettle-dyed colorway and we routinely custom dye solid colors on any of our yarn bases and have 300 custom solid colors available. FREE SHIPPING within the United States on all orders without a minimum.
