Wool Judging & Evaluation School with Dr. Whit Stewart (Adult)
The Wool Judging & Evaluation Schools are tailored for both youth and adult participants, offering a comprehensive understanding of wool assessment. The workshop emphasizes a blend of theory and hands-on practice to enhance participants’ grasp of the key characteristics determining wool quality. Engaging activities, including grading wool, evaluating clean fleece yield, assessing staple length/strength, and employing comparative placing techniques, form a significant part of the program. Real-world examples from fleeces sourced nationwide will be utilized for practical learning.
Led by Dr. Whit Stewart, Extension Sheep Specialist/Associate Professor at the University of Wyoming, the workshop combines his expertise in teaching, research, and outreach. The workshop’s outcome is to equip youth and adult wool enthusiasts with the skills and resources needed to objectively evaluate wool, preparing them for competitive wool judging events or fleece exhibition formats.
If there is sufficient interest, a 4-H wool judging program will be started in Maryland (similar to other 4-H judging programs). Youth interested in competitive wool judging are strongly encouraged to participate in the 2024 wool judging school.
Class Fee: $20 per person for adults (over age 18). Pre-registration required at https://mswf2024.eventbrite.com.
